The thought of going back to school gives me the heebie-jeebies, but if I had to do it, it's good to know that in between classes at UBC, there are places like Mahoney's to get gooned.
They say Mahony's is an Irish Pub, but I really have no idea what an Irish Pub is supposed to be. Like Cheers? I have no idea, but the staff here are very friendly and the service was great.
On the night we went, there was some sort of party there, and a live band, so it got pretty loud in there. If you're looking for quiet time to study, you might want to try somewhere else. Haha, listen to me giving advice on studying when I don't know the first thing about doing well in school.
The scotch shots are all doubles so what the hell, a double Chivas on the rocks for me.
The beers were served in ginormous pints.
Samplers for those that want to try a little of everything.
So, there's a big iaido seminar this past weekend and three high-ranking instructors came from Japan to teach. During their stay, we wanted to introduce them to new things, inlcuding food. We tried the Bangers and Mash, which turned out to be one of the favourites. The sausages were really good, and came with some mashed potatos and veg (some I could not identify, haha!) that were just as good. It was so good, that the sensei requested two more orders (we ordered a bunch of dishes and shared).
The nachos were huge, and just about every chip had some melted cheese on it. Too bad for one of the sensei as he doesn't eat cheese! The guacamole I think was extra.Yam fries, nothing new to us, but the sensei had never tried yam fries, only potato fries. This was popular for a short while, but they got bored of it quickly. The dipping sauce was good. I think it was chipotle.
Our server recommended the quesadillas, and she was right on with that one because it was pretty damn good and surprisingly filling, even though it doesn't look like much. We got ours with potato soup as a side, which actually turned out not too bad. There was a vegetarian amongst us and he ordered a soup and salad. He claimed it was good, but I have my doubts, because he was always eye-balling our food, haha!
Someone ordered a burger which was apparently good. Looked smallish to me though.
Overall, Mahony and Son's was a good experience. We shared a lot of food and I wasn't particularly hungry to begin with so our bill wasn't horrendous or anything, but I can see it getting pricy if you want to eat a lot. I guess that's fine because you have to be filthy rich (or have a massive student loan) to go to UBC anyway.
Thanks for the review. No 'e' in Mahony and Sons though. Research before blogging
ReplyDeleteMr Lindsay? My English teacher from Grade 11? Haha, long time no see, how have you been?
ReplyDeleteAs you can tell, I never was good at spelling....but if you want to proof-read and spell-check my entire blog, you'd be at it for hours =)
