Fresh Slice - UBC

I can't believe I'm blogging about Fresh Slice....again, haha!  I've sunk to an all-time low, but hey, food is food right?  After my iaido class, I went with a couple of classmates to Fresh Slice.  This one felt a bit different than the ones I'd been to before....it had a mediteranean feel about it.  Not sure if it had something to do with the staff or the music blasting away in the background, but it was a bit different. 

It definitely wan't as greasy as the ones I had before, and they were pumping out pies with different toppings every few minutes.  It was cheap, and quick.  The only gripe I ahve is there's almost no place to sit.  It really is just a take-out place.

Hairy Curry? Curry Point and La Tandoor

I don't think I will ever eat here again.  The place is a filthy little dive in a corner of a nasty little food court in the Village of UBC.

To capitalize on the popularity of butter chicken, they charge an extra $2 for it when you order a 2 item combo and want two orders of butter chicken. Their prices are already not competitive with say Curry Express (which actually has better butter chicken in my opinion).

The butter chicken was a bit runny and not as rich as some other places.  If you like your butter chicken runny, Curry Point is for you.  For the most part, it was edible until........

............we found a hair at the end of the meal.  I know it's so cliche to complain about a hair in one's food, but c'mon, this is just downright gross.  I should have known better because that dingy little food court isn't fit for the cafeteria in a P.O.W. camp.  The entire place is minging, and the moment you walk in, you feel like you're surrounded in filth. 

Anyway, I'll never go back to Curry Point, just like this other place called La Tandoor in Steveston. 




La Tandoor is an Indian place in Steveston and when they first opened, lots of people were talking about it, but when I went, it was a pretty quiet place with an AYCE buffet table.  I went for the AYCE which was a huge mistake because all I eat is butter chicken and maybe sometimes tandoori chicken.  For $20+, I ate a lot of butter chicken, and I can get a decent butter chicken meal at Curry Express for about $8.  The butter Chicken was good though, don't get me wrong, but it's the dessert station where my experience fell apart.  There was a dark curly hair in the dessert that was some sort of rice pudding.

I guess it goes without saying I'll never go back to La Tandoor either.

Donair Town - UBC

The food court in the "village" at UBC really doesn't have much of a selection that I'd be brave enough to try - it's always damp, filthy and minging. But sometimes after class on a Saturday afternoon, the crew from my iaido class wants to grab a bite to eat and when we're too cheap to eat at Vera's Burger, it's the food court in the village. I've tried a couple of different places, including the sushi place (pics and review to come), as well as the Indian place (also pics and review to come) which has a pretty good Butter Chicken. The only gripe I have with the Indian place is that it costs more than Curry Express, and if you order a two item combo, they nail you an extra charge if you want two orders of butter chicken.....wtf. There are a couple of Chinese places but my ancestors would be rolling in their graves if I had Chinese food at this food court.

The donair at Donair Town is massive here...and when I say massive, I mean don't bother picking it up and try to eat with your hands because it's not going to happen....not gracefully anyway. On more than one occasion, I've seen my pals just pick up a fork, tear the thing open and treat the wrap as an edible bowl.

Me, I usually get the the lamb platter, which isn't half bad. I'm not sure it's 100% lamb - there's probably some ground up lamb mixed into it. The meat isn't very gamey, which means it's either got some filler in there, or the seasoning covers most of it up. I'm willing to bet it's both. Well, whatever, it tastes good. The houmous doesn't have much flavour until there's some chili powder dumped into it, the rice is good, and the salad could use a bit more dressing, some feta, some olives and maybe some onions, but that's just me being picky. Hilarious, I'm eating at a food court - shut up already.

Anyway, it's what I get when I go to the Village, and it's not bad. The staff are friendly, the food tastes good overall, and it's not that expensive.

The Pit pub at UBC

One of the regular drinking holes we go to after class sometimes is The Pit pub at UBC.  It's within walking distance to our dojo and cheap beer on Tuesday nights.  I'm not much of a beer drinker myself, but even I know that $10/pitchers is a good deal. 

If we get there early enough, we might catch the kitchen before it closes.  Nothing beats some greasy deep fried food to go with the cheap beer.  I think their last call is 9pm, which is a bit early if you ask me.

The calamari is your regular run of the mill frozen stuff which is usually over-fried, but can't complain for $5.00.

I like to get the sampler platter, which comes with a little of everything - their version of fries, mozzarella sticks, zuchinni sticks, and mushrooms. 

The food is cheap and unhealthy, drenched with oil, but nobody said it was gourmet.  It's cheap, and convenient, and within walking distance of the SRC at UBC.  The only problem with the Pit is, sometimes the place is packed and really, really noisy.  Other times, it's empty, and relatively quiet enough to have a decent conversation.

Pie R Squared

If you're a student at UBC, Pie R Squared is a great place to grab a quick and cheap bite to eat.  As far as pizza by the slice is concerned, it's ok.  It's nothing compared to Romano's downtown, but really, it's the best bang for your buck at this overpriced university.

After my Iaido class on Tuesday nights, I sometimes go with my sensei and other students over tio The Pit for a pint, and I usually stop by Pie R Squared to bring a slice with me.  Itès hit and miss, sometimes I end up with a slice that's been sitting there all day and pretty dried out, other times, I manage to catch them right as they bring a fresh pie out of the oven.  The service is usually friendly, the only crappy thing is they close around 9pm or so.
